
Academic Qualifications and Career
Dr. Khagen Sarma is an Assistant Professor of Nepali in the Department of Modern Indian Languages and Literary Studies at Gauhati University, Assam. He holds an MA and a Ph.D. in Nepali from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu. With over 20 years of academic and teaching experience, Dr. Sarma has made notable contributions to the fields of Nepali literature and education, particularly in the context of India and the Northeast region.
Contributions to Nepali Literature and Education
Dr. Sarma’s contributions to Nepali literature and education are vast and multifaceted. He has published numerous books, co-edited significant works, and served as an editor for various Nepali textbooks and dictionaries. His scholarly activities extend beyond the classroom, as he has actively contributed to academic committees, syllabus development, and translation projects. Dr. Sarma has collaborated with prestigious institutions such as NBT India, NCERT, and the Government of Assam. His editorial work includes critical contributions to Nepali, Assamese, and English language resources.
Awards and Recognition
Dr. Sarma has received several prestigious awards in recognition of his exemplary contributions to Nepali literature and education. Notably, he was honored with the Freedom Fighter Prasad Singh Subba Smriti Puraskar in 2018 and the Lekhak Sambardhana Award in 2020.
Teaching Engagements
Apart from his role at Gauhati University, Dr. Sarma is teaching Nepali in the undergraduate program at the University of Delhi and has been involved in the
Diploma Course in Nepali at Uttarakhand Open University. His academic expertise has been sought by various institutions, including Gauhati University, North Eastern Hill University (Meghalaya), Delhi University, Cotton University, and Uttarakhand Open University.
Current Projects and Interests
Dr. Sarma is currently working on a Mono Lingual Nepali Institutional Dictionary for India and is involved in the creation of a Nepali Encyclopedia, both of which reflect his dedication to the preservation and promotion of the Nepali language. Secondly, he has proposed the construction of a Dharamshala/Guesthouse in Guwahati for special Nepali Kamakhya pilgrims.
Previous Work
Dr. Sarma has edited the Tri-lingual Nepali Dictionary (Nepali-Assamese-English) for ABILAC, Government of Assam, and translated Arup Kumar Dutta’s Braveheart of Assam Lachit Barphukan into Nepali, which was published as Asomkaa Mahaavir Lachit Barphukan by the Assam Publication Board.
Translation
Dr. Sarma has translated several works from English, Assamese, and Hindi into Nepali, contributing significantly to the cross-cultural exchange of literary works.

Involvement in Literary and Social Organizations
Dr. Sarma is actively involved in various literary and social organizations. He serves as the General Secretary of the North East Aashirvad Foundation (NGO) and the Lil Bahadur Chetri Foundation (Trust). He is also a member of the Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha and an advisor to the Guru Matsyachendranath Adhyatmik Samaj (Assam). Additionally, he holds the position of General Secretary of the Nepali Bhasha Vikas Manch. Thus, he is one of the Convenor of Himvatkhanda Nepali Bhasha sanskriti Manch ( International organization)

- The International Symposium on the Preparation of a Nepali Monolingual Dictionary and Encyclopedia at Gauhati University (November 6-7, 2022)

- A Study Tour Program to Kathmandu for Gauhati University and Cotton University faculty, to observe the birthplace of Nepali Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota

- The International Symposium on Revisiting the Roots of India-Nepal Relations: A Perspective of Guru Matsyachendranath at Gauhati University (February 10-11, 2025)
